R. Bret Shillingstad, MD served 13 years as the Medical Director in charge of Clinical Informatics for Epic Corporation based in Madison, Wisconsin. Trained as a surgeon, he joined Epic in 2004 when Epic had 800 employees and $150 million in revenues. Over those years he was instrumental in building Epic into the 2nd largest global electronic medical records (EMR) company in the world with nearly 13,000 employees and $3 billion in annual revenues. Thanks to much of Dr. Shillingstad’s contributions, Epic now supplies its EMR software to hospitals totaling 56% of all U.S hospital beds, nearly 300,000 physicians, and 75% of the retail walk in clinic market including CVS, Walgreens, Rite Aid and Target.
His role entailed clinical optimization, physician engagement, software demonstrations, assisting in clinical software development, research and reporting, clinical alerts, voice recognition, pre-go-live audits, and post-live visits. Dr. Shillingstad has also written a book on physician optimization. He regularly talks to clinicians, project teams, and hospital leadership regarding Electronic Health Records.
Prior to his role at Epic, he was co-founder and managing partner of the Alamogordo Clinic and President/Partner of the White Sands Surgical Associates surgical group.
Dr. Shillingstad received his B.A., Magnum Cum Laude at Carroll College and his M.D. from the University of the New Mexico School of Medicine. He completed his General Surgery training at the Mount Sinai Medical Center of the Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine in Cleveland, Ohio. He is Board Certified in General Surgery and a Fellow, American College of Surgeons (ACS).
